Apartments for short stays in Berlin
Berlin is packed with visitors year-round, but it can be especially cumbersome to book a room in summer, during Oktoberfest, Christmas, New Year’s, and Easter weekend. To rent an apartment in Berlin instead of a hotel room may prove a convenient and money-saving alternative, if you are staying longer and travelling with companions.
By choosing apartment accommodation in Berlin, you get a completely autonomous home with all the comforts and advantages of independent living. Apartments in Berlin are self-catering, so you can cook and make tea or coffee if you do not feel like dining out.
If you are about to travel with family or friends, apartment accommodation comes in handy, because renting a 1-, 2- or 3-bedroom apartment in Berlin is much easier than booking several hotel rooms, not to mention that it is much cheaper. Not only will you stay in a comfortable setting, but also you will be able to spend quality time together without necessarily having to go out.
The wide variety of apartments available in Berlin, especially in the central district Mitte, makes it easy to find a perfect apartment that suits you just right. Most of the apartments are close to major attractions and sites of Berlin which makes sightseeing a breeze.
Sweet Home Abroad also offers apartment, cottage and villa short-term rentals all over Europe and North America.

Getting around

The German public transit system is widely regarded as one of the most convenient in the world. If you will be using public transit in Berlin extensively, it is worth buying a pass for all types of transportation. Weekend passes are also available. If you attempt to stow away, it's worth knowing that fines for getting caught without a ticket are steep. There are other, more legitimate ways of saving money, one of which is Berlin-Potsdam Welcome Card (~19 euros). The card allows one person unlimited travel on all types of transit for 72 hours and offers up to 50% off on admission to museums, theatres, exhibitions and other points of interest in Berlin.

Buses in Berlin follow the schedule religiously, even though there are exceptions. Metro in conjunction with suburban trains system forms an extensive web of transit, allowing passengers relatively easy access to the far points of Berlin area. Metro is marked with a letter U, suburban trains - with a letter S. The cost of trip depends on the distance. Note that doors in most trains are not automatic and need to be opened manually.

Taxis can be caught on the street, but rates go up every day after 6 pm. Boarding fee is 2,50€ plus the service charge if you called for a taxi in advance. Every kilometre costs approximately 1,50€, but the further you travel, the less expensive it becomes. A customary tip amount is 2-3€.

The Berliners love bicycles, and there are many rental shops across the city. With a bicycle, you will usually receive a lock to secure the bike when you are out and about. The majority of rental shops and bicycle stores ask for a security deposit (around 100€ or an ID or credit card) in addition to a daily rental fee. You can buy a bicycle map called "ADFC - Stadtplan for Radfahrer" in any bike shop and in bookstores. If you spot a red-and-white bicycle with "Die Bahn" logo on it, you can rent it right then and there, provided that the light on it shines green and you have a valid credit card with you. Similar bicycles can be found all around Berlin, near metro stations and major intersections. Usage fee is 0,06€ per minute not counting a security deposit, but the minimum charge is 5€, the daily maximum is 15€. When you are done riding, you should leave the bicycle secured at one of the major intersections, or you will be charged a 20€ fine.
