Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall is long gone from the united Berlin, but the memory of it still lives and haunts the city. Many visitors of Berlin feel disappointed and surprised, when they learn that it is only pieces that are left from the most famous structure of Berlin. When the Wall feel, thousands of people armed with hammers attempted to take away a valuable souvenir piece.

Today the commemorative spot with a checkpoint and remnants of the Wall can be found in Der Wedding neighbourhood of central Berlin. A path along the Berlin wall marks the line of where former GDR structures stood at the border with Western Berlin. This is pedestrians and bicyclists only path stretching for over 160 km around the city. The path is dotted with crosses in remembrance of victims of the regime. Other spots where the Wall used to stand are marked with iron rails.

You can learn the history of the Wall in more detail in the Checkpoint Charlie museum, where a points-man booth from the Allies crossing still stands. The Eastside Gallery not far from Ostbahnhof keeps the longest part of the Wall still standing, covered with graffiti, including the famous kiss of Brezhnev and Honecker.
