Berlin conventions

Berlin ranks among the top ten of the largest exhibition centres of Europe: over 400 different conventions and congresses take place in Berlin annually.

Messe Berlin is the best-known convention centre of the German capital, whose 26 pavilions are used for the most large-scale events. The convention centre is located near the TV tower Funkturm, has several entrances to ensure access to the space which has the total square area of 160 thousand square meters. Most exhibitions are open to visitors from 10 am to 6 pm. The easiest way to get to Messe Berlin is by S-Bahn from the central train station, but you can also take metro on the line U2 in the direction of Ruhleben and exit at Kaiserdamm station. If you are driving, take the highway A10 and keep an eye for signs that say "Messegelande". By bus, you will have to use routes РҐ34, РҐ49, 104, 139 or 149 and exit at the Messedamm or ICC stops.

Here are some of the most popular conventions that are held at Messe Berlin.

Grune Woche (The Green Week) is an international agricultural exhibition and fair, held annually since 1926 and attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors and thousands of merchants. You can sample and buy various foods, beers, wines, liquors, cheeses, meat and poultry; test and purchase agricultural equipment and machinery, even household items. Seminars, lectures, conferences and Q&A sessions are also held for professionals and general public alike.

IFA is the world's largest electronics and appliances trade show, where industry professionals gather to sell their services. Starting in 2012, access will be given to the general public, and events will be organized to suit the interests of general consumers.

ITB Berlin is the leading travel and tourism convention whose main purpose is networking and establishment of commercial partnerships. This annual event showcases all segments of travel industry and attracts tour operators, travel agencies, hoteliers and leading publishers of travel literature.

Bautec is an international construction trade show that every 2 years sees the leading companies in many spheres related to construction and renovation gather under one roof. Construction materials, heating, water and gas delivery tools, ventilation structures and energy-saving appliances are showcased. The Bautec congress complements the trade show.

Every year merchants and masters of arts and crafts meet their customers at the Import Shop Berlin craft fair. The main purpose of the exhibition is sales of textile, leather handmade jewellery and clothing, ceramics, glassware, handmade gifts, souvenirs, toys.

Winter in Berlin is time for the annual Fashion Week Berlin, which is visited by industry stars and promising new talent. The most in-demand designers showcase their new collections that are to influence the fashion trends of an upcoming season. You can find the event calendar online at the Fashion Week Berlin official website.

Concurrently with Fashion Week Berlin, at the former Tempelhof airport, takes place a street fashion convention called BREAD & BUTTER. The convention is held biannually and brings together about 600 merchants who display and sell different types of clothing, including jeans, sportswear, casual clothing, street fashion and more. Thanks to its respected list of participants, BREAD & BUTTER is a leading buyer convention and a meeting place for merchandisers, light industry professionals and members of the press.

ILA Berlin Air Show is the oldest international convention and show of aerospace technology, aviation and astronautics, that celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2010. The convention attracts not only specialists in the field, but also members of the public, as after all the professional meetings of buyers and suppliers are over everybody is welcome at the international aerial show.

One of the most noteworthy art events in Berlin is The Berlin Biennale of Contemporary Arts, one of the "youngest" and most relaxed art events in Europe. In 2012 it is taking place from April 28 to July 1, for the seventh time. Berlin Biennale is an event with a relatively short history, but it has already proved itself with several outstanding projects, and the German minister of culture referred to it as "the beacon" guiding the progress of contemporary art development. The curator of the 7th Biennale is a Polish artist, photographer and director Artur Е»mijewski, and his associate curator is Joanna Warsza, the founder of Laura Palmer Foundation, who created projects for the Warsaw Museum of Contemporary Art and Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.

Looking for classical artistry and oil paintings here will prove fruitless, because, as the curators insist, video is the most fluid medium available to the modern artist today. For example, in 2011 the vast majority of works exhibited were videos bordering on documentary films and social photography. It is interesting to note that apart from galleries, the installations of the previous Biennale events were exhibited in former factory spaces, churches, dance halls, offices and even private apartments. And, of course, the city of Berlin remains one of the main themes of every Berlin Biennale.

Such abundance of conventions, exhibitions, fairs and shows for professionals and general public alike is a great reason to visit Berlin. It is important to find convenient accommodation in Berlin that could allow you to take full advantage of events offered by conventions, to visit all the shows, and to have your business needs catered to. Apartment rentals in Berlin are becoming more and more popular for accommodation during Berlin conventions and trade shows. Professionals of all fields understand the advantages: not only there is a full kitchen, a separate bedroom, reasonable prices, central locations close to the main convention centers of Berlin, but also unlimited Internet, an opportunity to be flexible during your business trip and hold business meetings in the privacy and comfort of your own home (you can read more about apartment rentals in Berlin here). Rent an apartment in Berlin short-term and see how great of an alternative to a hotel it is, when you come to visit Berlin and its many exhibitions.
