The National Gallery in London owns one of the finest collections of the Western European art, comparable in quality albeit not in number to Le Louvre in Paris and El Prado Museum in Madrid. The collection was started in 1824 and today contains over 2000 works, including the portrait gallery of British artists since the 12th century. The National Gallery owns numerous masterpieces: The Virgin of the Rocks by Leonardo da Vinci, Venus and Mars by Sandro Botticelli, The Mond Crucifixion by Raphael, Sunflowers by Vincent van Gogh, as well as works by Rubens, Titian, Rembrandt, Constable, Gainsborough, Turner and many others.
