The most famous square in Madrid was built in 1619 by the decree of Felipe the Third, whose equestrian statue graces the middle of the square. The plaza was completed under the direction of Juan GГіmez de la Moral, who in turn used the project of the architect Juan de Herrera, in particular his Casa de la PanaderГa plans. This building is central in the ensemble of Plaza Mayor and gives it its memorable look.
Plaza Mayor is full of restaurants that cater to tourists and are in general not recommended. However, it is worth finding a cafГ© that serves traditional calamari sandwiches there. Plaza Mayor also has one of the best numismatics and philately stores in Spain.
