Plaza de Cibeles is a beautiful square in the centre of Madrid, located at the intersection of Paseo del Prado, Calle del AlcalГЎ and Paseo de Recoletos, marking the boundaries of three Madrid districts: Centro, Retiro, and Salamanca. The plaza is located in front of Palacio de Cibeles, a gorgeous Neo-Gothic building that had been originally a postal service headquarters, but is now the City Hall of Madrid.
The focal point of Plaza de Cibeles is the namesake neo-classical fountain, El Fuente de Cibeles, built in 1781 by three sculptors: Francisco GutiГ©rrez, Roberto de Michel and Miguel XimГ©nez. The original design of the Cibeles Fountain was created by Ventura RodrГguez.
