Vías verdes in Girona

Vías verdes ("Green routes") is a long-term government initiative to encourage healthy and active lifestyle, promote sport and tourism in Spain.

Vía verde del Carrilet I: Olot - Girona (54 km)

The route from Olot to Girona trails along three districts of the province of Girona and along riverbeds of rivers Fluvià, Brugent and Ter. A narrow-gauge railway, which used to connect the districts of La Garrocha (Garrotxa) and Girones, is now a 54 km long cycling path. Cyclists have an opportunity to admire marvellous landscapes of the volcanic zone of La Garrocha, to cycle along narrow streets of ancient Catalan towns (Anglès, San Feliu de Pallerols and Girona among others), see hidden gems, such as the Hostoles castle (Castillo de Hostoles).

Vía verde del Carrilet II: Girona - San Feliu de Guíxols (40 km)

The trail from Girona to San Feliu de Guíxols runs along the old railway that was functional between 1892 and 1969. The whole 39,7 km-long path is devoid of sharp turns and steep slopes, ideally suited for beginners and recreational cyclists. Travellers can get to know Girona and the district of Baix Empordà while cycling along, starting with the lowland of La Selva, its farmlands and woods, and ending with the valley of the river Ridaura that separates two mountain massifs: Gavarres and Cadiretes. The trail finishes at the sea coast, in the town of San Feliu de Guíxols.

Vía verde del Hierro y del Carbón: Ripoll - Ogassa (12 km)

The name of this route translates as "The Road of Iron and Coal", which is a reference to the times of active forging in Ripoll and coal-mining in Ogassa. The railway between San Juan de las Abadesas and Toralles had been functional up until all mines closed in 1967. The section between San Juan de las Abadesas and Ripoll stayed open until 1980.

Vía verde del Tren Petit: Palamós - Palafrugell (6 km)

This route is known as "The Road of the Little Train": on March 23rd, 1887, a locomotive with several miniature carriages made its first run between Palamós and Girona. Today, the "green route" trails along only the part of the road and finishes in Palafrugell, taking only 6 km.

Vías verdes in Tarragona

Vías verdes, or Green Roads, is a long-term government initiative aimed at transforming abandoned railways into hiking and cycling paths and thus expanding sports, tourism and health activities in Spain.

Vía verde de la Terra Alta: Arnes-Lledó - Pinell de Brai (23 km)

The last train passed along this corridor in 1973. At present the remaining infrastructure of the former railway (20 tunnels and 5 viaducts) allows travellers to enjoy the beautiful landscapes of Sierra de Pandols mountains and the natural park Ports (Parque Natural dels Ports).

Vía verde del Baix Ebre: Tortosa - Pinell de Brai (26 km)

This route almost completely overlaps with the ancient Pilgrims path from Ebre in the direction of Logroño, which in turn intersects with Camino de Santiago, the Catholic Pilgrims route towards Santiago de Compostela, the capital of Galicia. The significance of this Pilgrims path for the Medieval times believers is clearly indicated by the size of the cathedral Santa Maria (built in the 14th century), as it is truly grandiose for a town as small as Tortosa. Along the route, hikers can take in views of the river Ebre, fruit plantations, small canyons. A segment of the route near the town of Xerta follows along the highway C-12.
